The drum turns. The timer counts down. You hear the machine working exactly the way it always has. And an hour later the clothes come out cold and damp.
A dryer not heating while the drum still turns is one of the most common washer and dryer repair calls we get in Vero Beach, and the cause is usually not the part people assume it is.
Here is the fact that explains almost everything about this symptom: an electric dryer is really two appliances sharing one cord. The motor that spins the drum and the controls that run the display are 120-volt loads. The heating element is a 240-volt load. Your dryer outlet delivers 240 volts as two separate 120-volt legs, and if one of those legs goes away, the motor still has everything it needs while the element has nothing at all.
GE says it plainly in their own service documentation: an electric dryer “may run with a partial voltage of 120 volts but it will not heat unless it has a 208V/240V power supply.” So a dryer that tumbles cheerfully with no heat is not a contradiction. It is the single most common shape this failure takes, and it is often not the dryer’s fault at all.
Gas dryers work differently, and we will get to those. But the checks below are worth running either way, and a few of them cost nothing but a couple of minutes.
What you can safely check yourself
1. Make sure you are actually running a heated cycle
This sounds insulting until it happens to you. Air Fluff, Air Only, and Air Dry all tumble without turning on any heat at all — they circulate room-temperature air by design. One accidental knob position and a perfectly healthy dryer looks broken.
- Confirm the cycle is a heated dry cycle, not Air Fluff, Air Only, or Air Dry
- Check the temperature selector separately from the cycle selector — they are two different settings on most machines
- If someone else did laundry last, assume nothing about where the dials are
2. Cycle the breaker fully off, then back on — once
This is the check that catches the lost leg, and it is the one most people skip because the breaker looks fine. GE addresses that directly: the breaker “could be partially tripped even if it does not look as though it has tripped.” A double-pole breaker can have one side open while the handle sits in a position that reads as normal at a glance.
- Unplug the dryer first
- Find the double-pole breaker for the dryer — it is the wide one that occupies two slots
- Push it firmly all the way to OFF, then back to ON. Halfway does not reset it
- Plug the dryer back in and run a heated cycle
Do this once. If the breaker trips again, stop. A breaker that trips repeatedly is reporting a fault, not being temperamental, and the next step belongs to a licensed electrician.
3. Gas dryers: check the shutoff valve
On a gas machine, the mundane cause comes first. If the gas shutoff valve is closed, Whirlpool notes that “the drum of the dryer will still turn, but the dryer will not heat.” The handle should sit parallel to the pipe when the valve is open. Perpendicular means closed.

- On a new installation, confirm the gas line was actually turned on
- A gas dryer also needs its own 120-volt outlet — check that it has power
4. Clean the lint screen properly
Pulling the visible lint off is only half of it. Liquid fabric softener leaves a film on the mesh that you cannot see and cannot feel, and that film restricts airflow badly. Whirlpool recommends a deep clean every six months with a nylon brush, hot water, and liquid detergent.
- Clear the screen before or after every load
- Every six months, scrub it with a nylon brush and soapy hot water, then dry it fully
- Do not rinse the screen with water during routine cleaning — wet lint is far harder to remove
5. Watch the outside vent hood while the dryer runs
Go outside with the machine running and look at the exterior vent. You should see the flapper open and feel warm air moving. If the flaps stay shut, the duct is blocked somewhere between the machine and the wall.
- Confirm the flapper opens and air is actually escaping
- Check for bird nests, wasp nests, and debris in the opening
- A flapper stuck permanently open when the dryer is off is its own warning sign — it means the vent needs attention
6. Look behind the machine at the visible duct
Pull the dryer out and inspect the flexible transition duct. It should not be crushed, kinked, or packed with lint. Under the residential code that duct has to stay visible and unconcealed, be no longer than eight feet, and carry a UL 2158A listing.
If the dryer is not heating after all that
Past this point you are into work that requires either test equipment or a license. Here is what the likely causes are and who is allowed to touch them.

That last row deserves a note, because the internet gets it backwards constantly. On the Whirlpool and Maytag platform, the thermal fuse is wired in series with the drive motor on electric dryers and in series with the gas valve on gas dryers. The practical consequence is that on many electric machines a blown thermal fuse means the drum will not turn at all — so it is not the answer to “tumbles but no heat.” On a gas machine, the same part failing produces exactly that symptom. Same manufacturer, same component, opposite presentation. The wiring diagram for your specific model decides it.
There is one more thing worth understanding, because it is a safety issue rather than a repair issue. The thermal cut-off in your dryer is a one-time device. It exists to stop the machine when temperatures climb past where the regular controls should have held them. Every major manufacturer says some version of the same thing about replacing it — LG instructs technicians to replace the pair “after determining what caused thermostat to open,” and Frigidaire states that a technician must replace the limiter “after correcting the fault.”
Dropping in a new thermal fuse without clearing the vent is not repairing the dryer. It is re-arming it.
That matters more than it sounds. Federal fire data attributes roughly a third of all clothes dryer fires to failure to clean, and dust, fiber, and lint are the leading item first ignited. The safety device did its job. Replacing it while leaving the blockage in place removes the only thing that stopped the fire the first time. That is why we treat dryer vent cleaning as part of the repair rather than an add-on.
When to stop and call
Stop and pick up the phone if the breaker trips a second time, if the outlet or plug feels warm or looks discolored, if you smell anything burning, or if the dryer has started taking two cycles to dry one load. That last one is the early warning most people ignore for months.
If you smell gas, leave the house first, then call the gas company from outside. Do not flip switches, do not use the phone indoors, and do not try to find the leak yourself.
Everything past the vent hood and the lint screen involves either 240 volts, a gas line, or sheet metal edges that manufacturers themselves warn technicians to wear cut-resistant gloves around.
