Standing water in a dishwasher is one of the most common appliance repair calls we take in Vero Beach, and one of the most common that did not need to happen. Some of the machines we open up are draining exactly the way the manufacturer designed them to. Others are blocked by a molded plastic plug the size of a quarter that a plumber forgot to knock out. Work through this list before you book anyone.
First, decide whether the water is even a problem
GE publishes two different normal conditions depending on how your machine is built. On models without an Ultra Fine filter, one to two cups of clean water covering the bottom of the tub is normal. On models with one, water in the filter area is normal but it should not cover the tub floor. Whirlpool puts it in one line: normal level is just above the filter screen. So the rule is:
- Clean water confined to the filter well — normal, leave it alone.
- Dirty water above the filter screen, covering the tub floor — not normal.
- A level that is higher after every cycle than the one before — not normal, and getting worse.
- Water backing into the sink or spitting from the chrome cap on the counter — the cause is outside the dishwasher.
The knockout plug, and the pencil test that proves it
If your dishwasher has never drained properly since somebody installed a new garbage disposal, this is almost certainly it.
Every major disposal brand ships with the dishwasher inlet sealed by a molded plug that has to be removed at install. If it is not, the drain path is blocked from day one. InSinkErator’s manual is blunt: the plug must be removed, cannot be replaced once knocked out, and if the connection is made without removing it the dishwasher may overflow. GE says it in capitals, that the dishwasher will not drain if the plug is left in place.
Here is the part nobody mentions. The plug is recessed inside the inlet and is not visible when you look at the fitting from the side. You cannot confirm it by eye. Whirlpool publishes a test instead: cut power to the dishwasher, put a bucket under the connection, pull the drain hose off the disposal inlet, and insert a pencil. If it goes in about three inches, the plug has been removed. If it stops short, it has not.
If the plug is still in, do not guess at the method
This is where a generic video gets you in trouble, because the brands contradict each other.

Waste King forbids the exact tool InSinkErator recommends, and the Moen plug is not a knockout at all. Follow the manual for the unit you own, kill power at the breaker first, and never put a hand inside a disposal.

The filter, and how often yours really needs cleaning
A plug problem is a hard failure from day one. A filter problem is a gradual decline. If the machine used to drain fine and slowly got worse, look here. KitchenAid describes the stack: an upper assembly that keeps oversized items out of the pump, and a lower filter that stops food being recirculated onto your dishes. The tells are visible soil on the upper assembly and dishes that feel gritty.

What those numbers are really saying is that the driver is not the calendar, it is whether you scrape. Load plates straight from the table and run eight loads a week and you need it out every two weeks. Rinse first and you can go most of a year.
When you clean it, order matters. KitchenAid says larger food particles or foreign objects, including toothpicks and broken glass, should be carefully removed by hand and discarded before removing the filters. Gloves and a flashlight, never a blind sweep with bare fingers. Soft brush only, no wire brush or scouring pad.
Two reassembly points cause repeat calls. Never run the machine without the filters installed, and if the top filter assembly turns freely, it is not locked into place.
Under the sink
Run the disposal for thirty seconds before starting the dishwasher, which is what GE recommends as a habit, and watch whether the sink drains fast. If the sink is slow, the dishwasher is a symptom and you need a plumber, not us. Then look at the drain hose. It should rise to the underside of the counter and be fastened there, which is what stops sink water siphoning back in. The required height is not one number.

A Bosch installed to GE’s 32-inch spec is fine. A GE installed to Bosch’s 20-inch spec is out of spec. The twenty inches everyone repeats online is not a universal number.
The 2023 Florida Building Code Residential, section P2717.2, states that the dishwasher discharge shall rise to the underside of the counter and be fastened or held in that position. Florida accepts the high loop. A deck-mounted air gap is not required in dwellings here, which is why almost no local kitchen has one, and why a sagging unfastened hose is the most common drain defect we find.
Detergent and a reset worth trying
GE states that the wrong type or too much detergent causes over-sudsing that prevents proper draining. Whirlpool names the culprit precisely: dishwashing detergent does not create suds, but dish soap does, and concentrated spray-on dish soap residue left on plates will foam up in the next cycle. Their fix is to cancel, unload, add a quarter cup of cooking oil to the tub floor, and run a quick cycle with no detergent.
One absolute rule: never pour drain cleaner into a dishwasher. GE prohibits it outright. Before you call, note any error code and try a thirty-second power cycle at the breaker, the reset Whirlpool publishes for their Long Drain fault.
What is left, and why it needs a tech
Whirlpool’s service manual describes what is inside. The drain pump runs on 120 volts, energized for the first sixty seconds of a cycle and ninety seconds after the wash pump stops, with a check valve flapper keeping dirty water out of the sump. The drain pump and wash pump are separate motors, roughly 25 to 35 ohms for the drain pump against 44 to 87 ohms for the wash motor coils. That separation explains a symptom people find confusing: a failed drain pump leaves a full tub even though the machine washed normally, while a failed circulation pump leaves dirty dishes but an empty tub.
Their no-drain cause list runs, in order, from an obstructed drain path, to an open winding in the drain motor circuit, to a fractured impeller, to a check valve that is not sealing, and only last of all to a faulty drive circuit on the control board.
Notice that ordering. The board is dead last, after every mechanical and wiring check. Anyone who quotes you a control board over the phone without opening the machine is guessing.
One local note on hard water
Whether scale matters depends on where your water comes from, and that splits this county in half. On county or city water you are in decent shape. Indian River County Utilities reports finished water total hardness around 110 to 115 milligrams per liter, roughly six and a half grains per gallon, which is only moderately hard.
On a private well it is a different story. The USGS survey of Indian River County groundwater found hardness of 180 to 328 milligrams per liter in the shallow clastic zone and 240 to 434 in the shallow rock zone, roughly 10 to 25 grains per gallon.
Put that against KitchenAid’s threshold of 15 grains for monthly filter cleaning and the split is obvious. The well half of this county is genuinely in monthly-filter and descaling territory. The city half is not. Treat the USGS figures as aquifer character, not a reading on your own well.
