A refrigerator that stops cooling feels like an emergency, and sometimes it is. But a real share of the calls we run in Vero Beach end with no parts on the invoice, because the machine was switched into a store display mode or its vents were packed shut. Here is what to check, in the order a tech checks it.
Most of our refrigerator and freezer repair calls in Indian River County start with two things that cost nothing to rule out, so start there before you assume the worst.
Start with the free one: demo mode
Almost every modern refrigerator has a showroom mode that runs the lights and display while shutting cooling off entirely. It is meant for retail floors, and it gets switched on by accident more often than anyone expects.
Whirlpool describes the symptom exactly: the refrigerator and freezer will not cool even after changing the temperature settings, temperatures do not drop after several hours, and you may hear little to no compressor noise. LG puts a code on the screen, stating that a panel showing O F F means the unit is in demo or display mode, which disables all cooling in both sections.
If the lights work, the display works, and the box is dead silent, check this before anything else.
The exit sequence is specific to your control panel, not to your brand. Whirlpool alone publishes six different combinations, and LG splits theirs by model year using the serial number. Look up your own model on the manufacturer’s support page rather than trying combinations from a video.
Freezer cold, fridge warm: this is almost never refrigerant
This is the most misdiagnosed pattern in the business, and understanding it can save you an expensive and unnecessary quote.
On most household refrigerators there is only one evaporator coil, and it lives in the freezer. GE spells out the architecture: on a single evaporator system, air is circulated through vents from the freezer section to the fresh food section and back. Your refrigerator compartment is not independently cooled, it is fed cold air from the freezer through a duct.
Once you know that, the diagnosis follows. If the freezer is still holding zero, the sealed system is working. A refrigerant leak or a failed compressor starves both compartments, not one. Cold freezer with a warm fridge is an air delivery problem between the two.
The usual causes, in order:
- Blocked vents. Whirlpool is direct about this. Items crowded or pushed against the back and side walls obstruct the vents that distribute chilled air, and if the return vents are blocked by bulky items the cycle is broken, leading to a warm refrigerator compartment. Their fix is unglamorous and it works: leave gaps between containers and stop stacking too high.
- The airflow control. Many top-freezer models have a damper on the back wall of the freezer regulating how much air crosses over. If someone bumped it, the fridge starves.
- The evaporator fan. If the fan pushing air through that duct is dead, nothing moves. Open the freezer and listen with the door switch held in.
- A frosted-over evaporator coil. This one deserves its own section.
The defrost failure signature
Every frost-free refrigerator melts ice off its evaporator coil on a schedule using a heater under the coil. When that system quits, ice builds into a solid slab across the coil and the duct, acting as insulation and as a dam, and airflow to the fresh food section drops off first.
Here is the pattern we see in the field, and it fools people. The fridge goes warm. The homeowner unplugs it overnight, the ice melts, and it cools beautifully for a week or two. Then it goes warm again. That recovery and relapse cycle is the fingerprint of a defrost failure, not of low refrigerant. A machine low on charge does not get better because you unplugged it.
Unplugging the fridge overnight is not a repair. It is a diagnosis. If it works, you have just confirmed the defrost system is dead.
The parts involved are the defrost heater, a bi-metal terminator, a thermal fuse, a thermistor, and the adaptive defrost control board. Sorting out which one failed means pulling the rear freezer panel and metering live circuits, so that is a tech job. Identifying the pattern before you call still saves everyone time.
The coil cleaning advice that is mostly wrong
Nearly every article on this topic opens by telling you to clean your condenser coils twice a year. For most modern refrigerators that is not what the manufacturer says.
Whirlpool’s own guidance: there is typically no need for routine condenser cleaning in a normal home operating environment, though if the environment is particularly greasy or dusty, or there is significant pet traffic, the condenser should be cleaned every six months. They add a caution people miss, that for some models an authorized service provider must be contacted to do it.
GE goes further. Current models with automatic defrost have what they call a NeverClean condenser that does not require cleaning or maintenance, because the coils sit inside the compressor housing rather than on the back or underneath. On those units only the floor beneath needs vacuuming.
So the rule is: find out what your model has first. If you have pets, a greasy kitchen, or construction dust, and your coils are the accessible kind, clean them every three to six months with the unit unplugged, using a vacuum and a soft brush. Otherwise inspect and leave it alone.
One more number worth having. Sub-Zero publishes a genuine stop-rule: if the temperature is above 48 degrees when the cabinet is set to 38, it is unlikely to recover from a condenser cleaning. That is a rare piece of concrete guidance, and it works as a sanity check on any brand. Ten degrees above setpoint is past where housekeeping fixes it.
Gaskets, humidity, and one setting Florida homeowners have backwards
Most people test a door seal with a dollar bill, closing it in the door and feeling for resistance as they pull it out. It works, but it samples a few points around a perimeter several feet long.
GE’s own procedure is better and almost nobody knows it. With power disconnected, put a 150 watt flood lamp on an extension cord inside the cabinet, close the door, and look around the seal in a dark kitchen. Light escaping from suspected areas confirms a poor gasket. It maps the whole perimeter at once. GE notes the obvious caveat, that light will show where the cord passes through the door.
Now the setting. Your refrigerator has small heaters around the door frame and the center post between the doors, meant to stop condensation forming on the outside of the cabinet. The Energy Saver switch turns those heaters off to save power.
Whirlpool’s guidance is written for exactly our climate: turn Energy Saver off if you notice moisture on door gaskets, the center mullion, or cabinet seams, especially in warm humid weather or in kitchens without air conditioning. In a Vero Beach kitchen, Energy Saver on is frequently the wrong setting. The few dollars a year it saves are not worth soaking the gaskets.
Garage and lanai units
A second refrigerator in the garage is standard around here, and it is where we see the most heat-related failures. GE does not recommend installing one where the temperature will exceed 110 degrees, warning that extreme heat could cause the oil to overheat and break down, damaging the compressor or sealed system. They also advise against locations below 60 degrees unless the unit says otherwise.
And a claim that surprises people: GE states plainly that aftermarket garage kits or heater kits should not be used. If you want a fridge in an uncooled garage, buy one sold as garage-ready, built and calibrated for the wider range, rather than bolting a kit onto a standard unit.
What you should not touch, and why
Everything above is safe for a homeowner. The sealed system is not, and that is not a guild protecting its turf.
EPA regulations under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act require that technicians who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of equipment that could release refrigerants be certified, and household refrigerators fall under Type I. Opening a sealed system without certification and recovery equipment is a federal violation, not a shortcut.
There is a safety layer on top of the legal one. Most refrigerators built in the last several years use isobutane, R-600a, which is flammable. The charge is small enough that an intact machine is not a household hazard, but puncturing or torching a sealed system in a closed room is genuinely dangerous. Check your rating plate, it states the refrigerant.
One last thing if you own an LG. Their published terms cover the linear or inverter compressor as parts only for years six through ten, with the consumer charged for labor. Ten-year compressor coverage sounds generous until you learn that labor is the entire cost of a sealed-system job.
